Sustainability

At Our Lady's Catholic Academy, we strongly believe that we have a duty to educate our pupils about the impact of our actions on our planet. Our intent is to provide our children with the knowledge and understanding to enable them to live their lives in a way which has a positive impact on our environment. Our Catholic Social Teaching Principles are closely linked to sustainability and together we work to take care of God's creation.

As such, the Sustainable Development Goals have been mapped out throughout our curriculum to provide opportunities for pupils to engage in learning and respond to key questions about how we can best take care of our world. These goals, not only focus upon care for our environment, but also teach us about how we should make our world a fairer place to live.

How do we teach pupils about sustainability?

In our wider curriculum, which includes Geography, History, Art and Design Technology, each unit of work has a key question linked to the Sustainable Development Goals. These questions provide an opportunity for pupils to reflect and consider the way our actions as a society can impact on our world.

Examples of these questions can be seen below:

  • How can we look after our oceans/rivers?
  • How can we ensure that we use the earth's resources sustainably?
  • What impact does travel have on the environment?
  • What could our earth look like in the future if we don't become more sustainable?
  • Does everyone around the world have access to the same medication?
  • How can we learn from the past to reduce the inequalities of today?

How can we take action?

11 by 11 Challenges

Our 11 by 11 challenges provide opportunities for our pupils to build cultural capital by taking part in a series of activities in order to win Bronze, Silver of Gold certificates. These activities are mapped out to link to Catholic Social Teaching Principles and Sustainable Development Goals. This means that, by taking part in our 11 by 11 challenges, each of us can make a small positive impact towards achieving the goals!
